HEALTH & FITNESS

Prematurely thinning hair is a frustrating fact of life for many people, both male and female. Options are available, like Rogaine, transplants or hair fusion – but they can often be involved and prohibitively expensive.  An alternative, more practical method can often be to attempt natural solutions – without chemicals or surgery. Here are 10 methods to keep your hair where it belongs – on your head.

1. Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto decreases your body’s production of DHT, a metabolite of testosterone which  causes hair loss. Preliminary research shows that Saw Palmetto treatments can work to prevent hair loss in some males.

2. Daily Vitamin Regimen

Vitamin A, Omega-3, Vitamin E and B vitamins help your body to promote scalp health, stimulate circulation, and produce melatonin (which gives hair a healthy color).

3. Scalp Massage Combined with Essential Minerals

Daily scalp massage will help promote vital scalp circulation, keeping hair follicles active. Include nourishing egg oil in a sesame oil base every other day for three months to see noticeable results.

4. Hot Oil Treatments

Maintain moisture in your hair with hot oil. Use any natural oil (including olive or canola). Heat oil to a warm (not hot) temperature. Massage into your scalp  and leave on for an hour (a shower cap will help), then rinse or shampoo out. Don’t repeat too often as over-treatments can lead to premature graying.

5. Garlic, Onion or Ginger Juice

Rub one of these into your hair  for an overnight treatment (again, wearing a shower cap will help). Remember to only use one, do not mix!

6. Green Tea Treatments

Green tea contains anti-oxidants, which may promote hair growth. Brew two tea bags in a cup of water, let cool sufficiently and apply. Leave on  your hair for one hour, then rinse or shampoo off.

7. Eat More High-Protein Foods

Initial research shows that lean meats, soy, seafood or other high-protein foods may help slow hair loss. Protein-rich foods also contain Vitamin B-12.

8. Care For Your Existing Hair

Don’t brush your hair when it’s wet or towel-dry your hair. It’s always best to let your hair air dry.

9. Try To Cut Down on Stress

Stress can often be a prime cause for hair loss.  Meditation, exercise, relaxation or therapy can help reduce your levels of stress, helping your hair in the process.

10. No Wigs, Hairpieces or Cover-Ups. Ever!

While they may seem like a quick or easy solution to hair loss, they may also end up damaging your follicles and making the situation worse. Besides, in most cases, you’re not really fooling anyone.
