A great sports comeback is a spectacular achievement and one which has to be celebrated. Throughout the history of sport there have been many great comebacks which seemed impossible when they were happening. With that in mind, here is the list of the 10 greatest comebacks of all time.
University of Kentucky Wildcats – 1994
The Kentucky Wildcats upset the odds when they came from behind and won at LSU in 1994, a dramatic win which even left their own coach Rick Pitino, speechless. The Wildcats were 31 points behind with a only 15:30 minutes left in the game and they managed to overturn that deficit and win, to complete one of the greatest comebacks of all time.
Indianapolis Colts – 2003
Monday Night Football has seen some truly spectacular games over the years, none more spectacular than the game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Colts caused a stunning turnaround in the game as they scored 21 points in the last five minutes of the game and won 38-35. They were trailing 28-7 in the fourth quarter and were inspired by Peyton Manning to create one of the greatest comebacks of all time.
Boston Red Sox – 2004
The Boston Red Sox have played some truly memorable games over time, and have had some great comebacks, but one of their greatest comebacks was against the New York Yankees in the World Series. The Sox trailed 3-0 to the Yankees in the serious, but overturned the deficit in spectacular fashion and won the World Series.
Duke – 2001
Duke launched one of the greatest comebacks of all time when they overcame a 22 point deficit against Maryland and completed a 95-84 victory. It is regarded as one of the greatest comeback wins of all time.
Buffalo Bills – 1993
Buffalo Bills has the title of creating “The Comeback” of all comebacks, when they beat Houston in the greatest comeback in NFL history. Buffalo was trailing 35-3 to Houston in the second half and it took an inspired performance from Bills quarterback, Frank Reich, who threw no less than 4 touchdowns to launch a 41-38 win for Buffalo. It is rightfully known as one of the greatest comebacks of all time.
Brigham Young University Cougars – 1980
The 1980 Holiday Bowl and Brigham Young were playing Southern Methodist. Brigham were losing the match, until Jim McMahon stepped up, and along with BYU scored an incredible 21 points in the last three minutes of the game to inspire a remarkable 46-45 win to win the Holiday Bowl.
Indiana Pacers – 1995
The Eastern Conference Semi Finals in 1995 saw the Indiana Pacers beat the New York Knicks in spectacular fashion. The Pacers were behind and losing the game, until Reggie Miller scored an astonishing eight points in the final 18.7 seconds to win the game and spark one of the greatest comebacks of all time.
Philadelphia Flyers – 2010
The Philadelphia Flyers were trailing 3-0 in the series against the Bruins. It was the Eastern Conference Semi Finals in 2010, and the flyers sparked a stunning comeback to win the last 4 games of the series and book their place in the Finals.
University of Southern California Trojans – 1974
The comeback by the Southern California Trojans is one of the greatest in the history of comebacks, as the Trojans scored 55 points without reply after trailing 24-0 to the Fighting Irish. It was a miraculous win and one of the greatest comebacks of all time.
U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team – 2010
The U.S. Men’s National team had one of the most memorable comebacks, when they beat Algeria in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The American’s were tied 0-0 with only seconds left on the clock, and needed to a victory to advance out of the group stages. Landon Donovan stepped up and scored the winner to spark wild scenes all over the pitch as the U.S. Men’s National team advanced to the next stage.
